The Smart India Hackathon (SIH) has emerged as a pioneering nationwide initiative led by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The Journey of Smart India Hackathon
The journey of Smart India Hackathon began in 2017, with the inaugural edition witnessing the participation of over 100,000 students from 2,000+ colleges across the country. Since then, each subsequent edition has witnessed exponential growth in terms of participation and impact.
The second edition in 2018 expanded the scope, attracting over 200,000 students from 3,000+ colleges, along with the engagement of corporates, PSUs, and NGOs as problem statement providers. In 2019, the third edition saw a remarkable surge with over 300,000 students from 4,000+ colleges showcasing their ingenuity.
In 2020, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Smart India Hackathon adapted to the virtual landscape and garnered participation from over 250,000 students, proving its resilience and ability to foster innovation even in unprecedented times. The fifth edition in 2022 witnessed a hybrid mode, combining virtual and onsite events, and attracted over 350,000 students from 4,000+ colleges.
What’s New in Smart India Hackathon 2023?
Smart India Hackathon 2023 brings an evolution in its methodology, catering to different age groups through the introduction of two categories: SIH Junior (Jr) and SIH Senior (Sr). SIH Junior is designed for school students from 6th to 12th grade, offering them a platform to showcase their talent and generate innovative open innovation ideas. On the other hand, SIH Senior is open for regular students pursuing graduate, postgraduate, or PhD programs, providing them with an opportunity to unleash their problem-solving skills and contribute to nation-building.

Who can Participate?
- SIH Junior (Jr): School students from 6th to 12th grade will be able to showcase their talent and generate out-of-the-box open innovation ideas.
- SIH Senior(Sr): College students enrolled in undergraduate, postgraduate, or Ph.D. will be able to showcase their talent and generate out-of-the-box open innovation ideas.
SIH Junior (Jr) Registration Process
For school students, the registration and idea submission process for SIH Junior will be open from 23rd August to 31st October 2023. Students can register and submit their ideas through the official Smart India Hackathon website. It is an opportunity for young minds to exhibit their creativity and problem-solving abilities while addressing the diverse themes of the hackathon.

SIH Senior (Sr) Registration Process
For college students, the registration and idea submission process for SIH Senior will be open from 23rd August to 30th September 2023. Students cannot register individually; their college’s Single Point of Contact (SPOC) must register them on the SIH website. The SPOCs will nominate the top teams from their college’s internal hackathon results. These nominated teams will then proceed to submit their ideas against the problem statements provided by various government bodies, ministries, PSUs, and industry partners.

Themes and Problem Statements
SIH says “No problem is too big… No idea is too small”.
Smart India Hackathon 2023 encompasses a wide range of themes, reflecting the diverse challenges faced by the nation. These themes include:
- ROBOTICS AND DRONES: There is a need to design drones and robots that can solve some of the pressing challenges of India such as handling medical emergencies, search and rescue operations, etc.
- CLEAN & GREEN TECHNOLOGY: Solutions could be in the form of waste segregation, disposal, and improved sanitization system.
- TOURISM: A solution/idea that can boost the current situation of the tourism industries, including hotels, travel and others.
- RENEWABLE/ SUSTAINABLE ENERGY: Innovative ideas that help manage and generate renewable /sustainable sources more efficiently.
- BLOCKCHAIN & CYBERSECURITY: Provide ideas in a decentralized and distributed ledger technology used to store digital information that powers cryptocurrencies and NFTs and can radically change multiple sectors.
- SMART EDUCATION: Smart education,a concept that describes learning in the digital age. It enables learners to learn more effectively, efficiently, flexibly and comfortably.
- DISASTER MANAGEMENT: Disaster management includes ideas related to risk mitigation, Planning and management before, after or during a disaster.
- TOYS: Challenge your creative mind to conceptualize and develop unique toys and games based on our civilization, history, culture etc.
- TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS: Submit your ideas to address the growing pressures on the city’s resources, transport networks, and logistic infrastructure.
- SMART VEHICLES: Creating intelligent devices to improve the commutation sector.
- AGRICULTURE, FOODTECH & RURAL DEVELOPMENT: Developing solutions, keeping in mind the need to enhance the primary sector of India – Agriculture and to manage and process our agricultural produce.
- MEDTECH/BIOTECH/ HEALTHTECH: Cutting-edge technology in these sectors continues to be in demand. Recent shifts in healthcare trends and growing populations also present an array of opportunities for innovation.
- HERITAGE & CULTURE: Ideas that showcase the rich cultural heritage and traditions of India.
- FITNESS & SPORTS: Ideas that can boost fitness activities and assist in keeping fit.

The problem statements for SIH 2023 have been sourced from 26 Central Ministries, 6 State Ministries, and 4 Industry Partners. Smart India Hackathon 2023 Structure
Phase 1: Online Hackathon
In the initial phase of Smart India Hackathon 2023, participants will engage in an online hackathon, where they will have the opportunity to submit their innovative ideas and solutions. This phase is the foundation for the competition and serves as the entry point for all participants.
Phase 2: Physical Hackathon at Nodal Centers
The second phase of the hackathon is designed to elevate the competition to a physical level, providing a hands-on experience for the top 100 teams from the online hackathon.
