Chandrayaan-3, India’s lunar exploration program, has achieved remarkable strides. Its advanced lander is a testament to technological prowess, equipped with multiple instruments for in-depth analysis. The lander’s successful soft landing marked a historic moment, enabling the deployment of the rover to study the Moon’s surface. The ChaSTE, or Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment, payload onboard the Vikram Lander is a device that measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil. “At just about 10 cm below the surface, the temperature dropped to nearly -10 degrees Celsius, while it was about 45 degrees Celsius on the surface”, ISRO said.
The provided graph depicts temperature fluctuations of the lunar surface and nearby subsurface layers at different depths, recorded while the probe was penetrating the lunar terrain. Notably, this represents the inaugural temperature profile obtained for the southern pole of the Moon. Elaborate examinations are currently in progress to delve deeper into these findings.
The acquisition of these observations was facilitated through the synergistic endeavors of ISRO’s Space Physics Laboratory and the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad. The lander module of Chandrayaan-3 is equipped with a suite of four instruments, while the rover is outfitted with two instruments.
Additionally, the propulsion module, currently situated in lunar orbit, is also furnished with a single instrument. The ChaSTE payload, equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and instruments, has the potential to unravel crucial insights about the thermal behaviour of the lunar topsoil, shedding light on the moon’s geological history and composition.
The significance of these initial observations cannot be overstated. The lunar south pole has long remained a scientific conundrum, shrouded in mystery due to its harsh conditions and limited exploration. Previously, the head of ISRO, S Somnath, stated on Saturday that a substantial portion of Chandrayaan-3’s scientific mission goals have now been accomplished. The ISRO team is eagerly anticipating the upcoming 13-14 days with excitement.
In addition to the ChaSTE payload, the Vikram lander hosts several other significant payloads, including RAMBHA (Radio Anatomy of Moon-bound Hypersensitive Ionosphere and Atmosphere), Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA), and Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA). These integrated payloads constitute integral components of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which achieved a precise lunar landing at the southern pole, positioning India as the fourth nation to accomplish this feat.
On August 23, India wrote history by becoming the first nation to land a spacecraft, Chandrayaan-3, near the south pole of the moon. The mission has effectively fulfilled two of its three primary objectives. These achievements include successfully and precisely landing on the lunar surface and demonstrating the operational mobility of the rover on the lunar terrain. The ongoing focus of the mission now lies on the execution of the third objective, which involves in-situ scientific experiments.
“Everything is working very well. Chandrayaan-3, the lander, and the rover are very healthy, and all five instruments on board have been switched on. And it’s giving beautiful data now. So we are hoping that in the days to come, with another ten days remaining before September 3, we will be able to complete all the experiments with their full capability in various modes. There are different modes for which it has to be tested. So we have the best picture ever of the moon”, Somanath was quoted as saying by ANI.
